Frequently Asked Questions

What issues do you specialize in treating?2025-07-30T17:13:55-04:00

I work with individuals facing a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, ADHD, OCD, autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders, chronic pain, and addiction. My approach is personalized and supportive, grounded in years of hands-on experience in both hospital and outpatient settings.

At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Vincent P. Dole Institute for Opiate Dependence, I helped clients navigate recovery from opiate use disorder with compassion and structure. I also spent time at The Dorm, a private outpatient center for young adults, where I supported clients—often college students—returning to school or work using individual therapy, group sessions, and community-focused interventions.

In recent years, I’ve focused primarily on individual therapy and couples counseling, incorporating modalities like EMDR to effectively treat trauma. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply looking for support through a difficult chapter, I’m here to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

What therapy approaches do you use?2025-07-30T17:15:32-04:00

My approach is always personalized and collaborative. I draw from a range of evidence-based therapies, including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and harm reduction strategies—especially when working with clients navigating substance use.

With a background in addiction treatment and a deep understanding of how complex personal challenges can be, I take an eclectic approach, tailoring each treatment plan to your unique goals, strengths, and needs. My priority is to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where we can work together to foster meaningful, lasting change.

Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?2025-07-30T17:38:42-04:00

Yes—I offer both in-person and virtual sessions to meet your preferences and scheduling needs. If you’d like to meet in person, sessions are held through Talking Works. You can request an in-person appointment by visiting this contact page and noting that you’d like to work with me, Marisa Markowitz, in the message section.

Whether online or in person, I strive to create a safe, supportive space where meaningful change can happen.

How often will we meet, and how long does therapy last?2025-07-30T17:25:22-04:00

Most clients start with weekly sessions to build momentum and create a strong foundation for progress. As we begin to see meaningful change and you feel more confident, we may shift to biweekly sessions or space them out further. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we’ll regularly check in to make sure the pace and goals still feel right for you. My aim is to support your growth in a way that feels sustainable, empowering, and tailored to your needs.

Do you accept insurance or offer sliding scale fees?2025-09-21T01:31:07-04:00

I am currently in the process of becoming credentialed with several major insurance providers. These include:

Aetna, Cigna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New York, UnitedHealthcare (Optum), UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, Optum Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Carelon, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey, Horizon BCBS NJ Medicare Advantage, Humana Medicare Advantage, Independence Blue Cross (Pennsylvania), Quest Behavioral Health

If you’re unsure whether your specific plan is covered, I can help you verify your benefits or provide a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement while paneling is finalized.

I do offer sliding scale, and I’m happy to discuss those options with you!

What can I expect during my first session?2025-07-30T17:17:55-04:00

In our first session, you can expect a welcoming, judgment-free space where we begin to explore what brought you to therapy and what you hope to gain from it. If you already have goals in mind, we’ll talk through them together. And if you’re feeling unsure or stuck, that’s completely okay—we’ll work collaboratively to begin shaping goals that feel meaningful and achievable to you.

As a relational therapist, I prioritize building a strong, supportive connection. I’ll be an engaged partner in your process—helping you identify what’s getting in the way of growth, challenging unhelpful patterns, and guiding you toward clarity, healing, and forward movement at your own pace.
